4 - 16th November. 140 km in 7 stages

Manaslu Trail Race

The Manaslu Trail Race is a challenging multi-stage trail race passing through some of Nepal’s most beautiful Himalayan landscapes in a part-circumnavigation of Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest mountain. The 2023 race is happening between 4th and 16th of November.

Himalayan Stage Race

You’ll ‘run’ a total of ~140 km over 7 race days and hike ~40 km over two days.

You’ll cross a 5,160m pass, sleep at a monastery, (optionally) peer over the border into wild Tibet, run above a glacier on the trail to Manaslu Base Camp and enjoy many awesome trails in between.

You run with a light pack and all of your equipment is carried from stage start to stage finish.

Why participate in the Manaslu Trail Race?

A SUPPORTED RACE
You run with a light pack, everything else is carried for you. You sleep in 'tea-houses' on comfortable mattresses. We feed you big, home-cooked, meals and you just bring a few favorite energy snacks.

FRIENDLY
Up to 30-50 like-minded starters forming a friendly group. We invite young Nepali running talents to develop their running and interpersonal skills.

DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT
We run northwards towards Tibet, behind the stunning 8000 m Manaslu Massif, running at altitudes between 800 m and 3800 m, hiking up to 5160m!

SUPPORTING LOCAL RUNNERS
We invite around six young and upcoming local trail running talents to race and experience a stage race and travel to a new part of their country.

Testimonials

Every year runners are asked to give a little nugget to say what they thought of this event. Here’s a selection. We have more recent feedback here on the testimonials page.

“Trail adventure of a lifetime….due to combination of jaw dropping scenery (I will never forget my first sight of Manaslu), fantastic trails, beautiful villages, humble people (highlight being invited into their home), excellent trip organisation and wonderful team camaraderie! …. a hugely rewarding challenge.”

Bruce Chisholm, NZ

“Best run I’ve done. Challenging run through spectacular scenery”

David Binney, NZ

“Physically and mentally, this was the toughest thing I have ever done in my life. And yet it was the most incredible adventure too –  astonishing scenery, fascinating villages and cultures, and, most of all, the wonderful people encountered in our fellow runners, Nepali crew and the locals whose lives we briefly passed through. Great to see the race give back to the communities through its partnership with LED and the delivery of light.”

Lilly Dyu, UK

“You will walk / run along with the mules on these ancient trails,  get over 5,000m passes, cross many rivers on these [suspension] bridges, hear the silence, see the sun rise on the Manaslu and share some really lovely food with people from all over the world. And after 12 days without a hot shower you will realise what a luxury it is when you finally have that hot shower…”

Jane Mak, NL

“Thanks for organising this event once again, had an amazing time and can’t wait to get back to Nepal! We were amazed by spectacular scenery, met great people and got to witness life in rural Nepal; it may be a cliche but it really was an experience of a lifetime!”

Mike Collins, AUS

“It’s one thing doing a race in the Himalayas and seeing those glorious snow-capped ranges from a distance; but to be running on a beautiful trail through these mountains with them towering above you one minute, then running up their steep sides the next and surveying the amazing views, that’s a unique running experience.”

Claire Palmer, UK

“Perfect training for ironman…… tougher than other well known larger scale multistage events and at the same time much more racer friendly.”

Willehard Wortelboer, NL

“A week of trail-running, altitude and adventure in Nepal  Thanks for all the effort the team put into this very enjoyable trip.”

Geoff Dunn, NZ

” It was definitely the hardest, worst thing I’ve ever done in my entire life …. I absolutely loved it!”

Karen Carrington, USA

“What a great race! I’m still very impressed by the beautiful landscape of the region around Manaslu in the Himalaya and the gorgeous local people I met during each stage of the race. All in all it was really a hard and tough 7 stage (and 12 days in total) race with in total 220 km and 13000m of ascent in an altitude between 800m to 5,000m.”

Anne-Marie Flammersfeld, UVU athlete, DE

“The Manaslu Trail Race was one of the toughest most beautiful races I have ever done! A challenge that will definitely take you outside your comfort zone and through a journey you will never forget.”

Yasmin Wadhai, Iraq

And from Anna Frost, the first female:

“Over the 8 days we followed the wonderful, almost untouched trails from the forest valleys to the high pass over to the Annapurna region. We were lucky for blue skies and warm days with super cold and starry nights. Everyone did amazingly well, pushing their comfort zones way out, pushing through physical pain and discomfort but always vibrant with mental energy after the long days out. Congratulations and thank you to all of you who made the journey so special. Happy Running!”
