Today’s start will be fast and flat for the first minute. Then we descend steeply to cross the river over a suspension bridge (walking please!) and then it’s a steep uphill again to reach a high traverse that follows the river’s course. We’ll pass villages of Bihi, Ghap and then have a long, steady climb (through beautiful, quiet old growth forest) to hilltop Namrung (checkpoint) before spilling out into farmed fields (likely at harvest time) before climbing again steeply and breathlessly to Lihi, and again briefly to Hinang.
This gompa (monastery) is partially newly rebuilt and the old gompa is very near by (go for a walk and see it). It lies at the foot of Himalchuli. Nang, or Himalchuli glacier is just a short-ish walk from the Gompa – as far as we know, no race participant has made the trip to see it. Hinang is another open, living and vibrant monastery with about 30 young monks normally living there though at the time we visit many or all of the monks will have left for winter study in Kathmandu. Few visitors come here and they will be happy to see us.
