The days of “North Fake” are over in Kathmandu. There used to be many small shops making copies of down jackets, usually with low quality materials and fake logos. You can still find low quality without a problem, but now there are several local manufacturers creating excellent quality outdoor clothing using the latest materials from S. Korea and China, under their own brand.
If you are currently wondering if your equipment is warm enough, and are considering buying in your home country, you have two other options.
- Buy in Kathmandu. Sleeping bags, down jackets, fleece jackets, insulated pants are all available at a substantial discount compared to, for example, European stores. Contact us if you want a clearer idea of prices. (Here is an out of date list with some pictures.)
- Rent. If you have no need for warm equipment, or are travelling further after this race, then renting is a good option. 15-20% of race participants do this every year.
So, let us know what equipment you need to rent in Kathmandu and we’ll try to prepare options in advance to save you time and bring them to the race hotel and make available before the briefing.
